The eighth annual Citizen of the Year, Golden Apple, and Unsung Hero Awards Ceremony took place, February 29, 2004, at White County Middle School. The crowd cheered and stood to their feet as Dr. Charles Mitchell was announced the 2004 Citizen of the Year. A large part of the crowd was Mitchell’s family, who had hidden until his award was announced, and cheered loud enough for Mitchell to realize they were all there to honor him. Mitchell, with tears in his eyes, after accepting the award from Bob Breeding, the 2003 Citizen of the Year, said, “Any credit I receive must go to my wife as well. I could do nothing without her.”

Mitchell was chosen from several candidates and was honored not only for his commitment to the community of Sparta and White County, but for courageous service to his country. He fought in World War II, and received the Combat Infantryman’s Badge, four Battle Stars for action in the European Theatre, the Bronze Star Medal, the Purple Heart and the Belgium Fourrag’ere for the heroic action of Company “A”, 526th Armored Infantry Batallion at Stavelot, Belgium. Most of the people of Sparta know him simply as, “Doc,” a man who gave over 34 years of his life to the medical profession. Mitchell has also been active in many civic organizations, including, the Red Cross, White County Health Council, American Cancer Society, and the Sparta Rotary Club. Mitchell is currently busy working to secure adequate library facilities in White County.
