Annie Martin Lauderdale Mitchell Obituary

Mrs. Annie Martin Lauderdale Mitchell, age 85, passed away Sunday, April 16th, 2006 at NHC of Sparta. She was born April 8, 1921 in Rockwood, TN to the late Robert and Ruth Cashion Lauderdale.

Annie Martin was active in PTA at local, state and national levels. She helped re-establish Girl Scouting in White County, served as president of the Highland Rim Girl Scout Council, and vice president of the Cumberland Valley Council. She was twice a delegate to the Girl Scout National Convention. She received the THANKS badge, Girl Scouting’s highest honor.

She was appointed by Governor Dunn to the Tennessee Advisory Council for Education of the Handicapped, and served 13 years as chairman. Other state appointments included United Organization for Education, Comprehensive Health Council, and Advisory Committee for Juvenile Delinquency.

She was currently serving as a trustee for the White County Community Hospital. She was active in the Methodist Church and served as president of United Methodist Women, as Sunday school teacher, and was the first woman to serve as Chair of the Administrative Board.

She has been a member of the Women’s Club since 1952. She was a past president of the UT Alumni Association. She was awarded membership in Omicron Delta Kappa, National Leadership Honor Society; recognized by the Chancellor for extraordinary success to the University; and named as Centennial Leader by the College of Human Ecology.

She was a member of Phi Kappa Phi, Omicron Nu and Delta Kappa Gamma. She is listed as a biographee in several editions of Who’s Who of American Women.

She is survived by her husband, Dr. Charles Austin Mitchell of Sparta; daughter, Virginia Marie Zarka of Houston, TX; sons, Charles Austin Mitchell Jr. and wife Janis of Old Hickory, TN; Robert Almont Mitchell and wife Jane of Sparta; grandchildren, Roman Jackson Zarka; Jessica Lauderdale Zarka; Charles Austin Mitchell III and wife Leslie; Aaron Reynolds Mitchell and wife Angela; Robert Almont Mitchell Jr. and wife Jennifer; Ayse M’Lynn Mitchell and husband Chris; Emily Estelle Mitchell; Annie Rosemarie Mitchell; and seven great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by one brother, Dr. Robert Lauderdale.
